How hackers hijack your phone number - and how to stop them

Hackers are increasingly using SIM swap attacks to hijack phone numbers and break into email, bank, and social media accounts. By tricking your mobile carrier into transferring your number to a SIM card they control, they can intercept calls, texts, and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes. This lets them reset passwords and commit identity fraud before you realize what’s happening.

Here’s how it works: criminals first gather personal details such as your name, birthdate, or address from social media, data breaches, or public records. Next, they impersonate you and convince your carrier to activate a new SIM card or port your number. Once your number is moved, your phone loses service while they receive all your calls and texts, including 2FA codes used to secure accounts.

You can protect your data with a few simple steps:

  • Lock your SIM with a PIN using your phone settings or by calling your carrier.

  • Add an account security PIN or password with your mobile provider to protect against unauthorized changes.

  • Stay alert for phishing attempts and never share personal details with unexpected callers or texts, always contact your provider directly.

  • Switch to app-based two-factor authentication instead of SMS codes.

Taking these precautions goes a long way toward preventing hackers from hijacking your number and accessing your most important accounts.
